1% for the planet

ZITA! has joined the global movement of committed entrepreneurs 1% for the Planet.

1% for the Planet is the only international collective of corporate philanthropists involved in environmental protection. It is an international movement of entrepreneurs committed to a new economy, more respectful of people and the planet. Member companies believe that they have a role to play in the fight against climate change, the erosion of biodiversity and other environmental issues. They are committed to donating 1% of their net sales to environmental associations.

As a result, more than $220 million has been donated by member companies directly to environmental associations since 2002 (see the 1% for the Planet graphic).

Zita is a multidisciplinary office that cultivates a plural and transversal approach to design and architecture, and now donates 1% of its turnover to organizations working for the preservation and protection of our planet.

"We are deeply eco-citizens and our projects are eco-responsible. Humanity is today called upon to respond to the most important challenge facing our society: to guarantee a sustainable living environment. Thus, after 50 years of domination, modernism is facing a new paradigm that prioritizes quality rather than quantity, so that the city is more alive and livable, sustainable and better for health. As architect-urban planners, we have a leading role to play and we make sure, in each of its projects, to reduce the ecological impact, to reduce the energy cost of the construction site, and to use recycled and/or biosourced materials, from local sources. It therefore makes perfect sense for us to donate 1% of our revenues to organizations that work to preserve and protect our planet. »

About 1% for the Planet

Launched in 2002 in the United States by Yvon Chouinard, founder and owner of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, former owner of Blue Ribbon Flies, 1% for the Planet is a collective of companies (2,500 worldwide) that commit to donating 1% of their annual sales to environmental protection organizations.

The mission of 1% for the Planet, a non-profit organization, is to increase environmental philanthropy and the impact of the actions carried out by environmental protection associations by facilitating their fundraising. In addition, the 1% for the Planet team is in charge of verifying annually the respect of the commitment of all its members, by checking the adequacy of the 1% turnover with the donations to approved associations.

France is the second country, after the United States, in terms of the number of entrepreneurial philanthropists who are 1% members, with nearly 600 member companies and 7 million euros distributed annually to approved associations (400 associations in France). Because we believe in the strength of the collective, events and working groups are organized locally so that philanthropic members and associations can meet and exchange ideas. The Rencontres Associations et Philanthropes is a major annual event (6&7 October in Paris) for the 1% community where pre-selected associations have the opportunity to pitch their project directly to patrons.

"There is a big difference between paying a percentage of your profits and paying a percentage of your sales," says Yvon Chouinard, founder and owner of Patagonia. "In one case, it's a charitable gesture; in the other, entrepreneurs are concretely demonstrating that environmental values are at the heart of their company's business plan."

The French entity 1% for the Planet, the only one outside North America, is based in Bluffy, Haute-Savoie.
